Our History
1980
Alex Tilley founds Tilley Endurables. He had been frustrated with sailing hats that blew off or sank; he therefore created a durable, wide-brim hat designed for outdoor/adventure use.
1984
First Tilley Apparel Line - The company begins manufacturing and retailing travel and adventure clothing (beyond hats) — marking the move from just headwear into apparel
1987
Tilley moves into its headquarters and manufacturing plant in Toronto (Don Mills Road) and opens a distribution centre in New York State.
Early 1990s
The brand’s hats were supplied to Canadian soldiers during the Gulf War and worn by explorers like Sir Edmund Hillary.
Mid 1990s
Full Apparel Expansion - The catalogue business grows significantly and the brand expands the apparel line from hats into shorts, pants, travel clothing (e.g., “anti-pickpocket” travel pants).
2018
Joe Mimram and partners under Unity Brands acquire and relaunch the brand; design focus shifts to fashion-forward adventurewear.
2022
The new Tilley Flagship Store opens on Ossington Avenue, marking a new chapter in the brand’s evolution.
2024
Tilley Sport is introduced under the creative direction of designer Kim Newport-Mimran, blending performance and modern design.
2024
Launch of the “Tilley Tuff Workwear line” — a workwear apparel collection by Tilley in partnership with Canadian home-improvement retailer RONA Inc., available exclusively at RONA stores.
2024
Tilley opens its Oakville store, expanding its retail presence in the Greater Toronto Area.
2025
Alex Tilley passes away at 87, leaving a legacy of craftsmanship, and adventure. We continue to honour his vision and spirit in everything we make.
